Robotics / Controls System Engineer
Summary
The Robotics / Controls System Engineer position ties multiple engineering disciplines together. Applicant expected to have a strong mechanical aptitude to understand the control requirements for complex mechatronic systems.
Must be a self-starter, using exceptional problem solving skills, ingenuity and sound engineering principles to create new, world class automation products
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Work closely with Engineering group and customer to determine requirements for projects.
- Communicate and work closely with manufacturing and engineering departments to meet objectives and milestones
- Implement machine controls systems using various architectures (eg.IEC 61131-3, KUKA KRL)
- Design and execute test plans/procedures to verify reliability and machine safety. Analyze results and deliver findings to relevant parties.
- Apply the many relevant North American standards to machine controls and electric design (CEC PART 1&2, UL508A, NFPA 70, NFPA 79)
- Application of European machine safety & electrical safety directives would be an asset
- Design, Implement and troubleshoot industrial communication networks with a variety of physical media and communication protocols.
- Produce product testing plans & schedules.
- Evaluate new technologies to determine their relevance to future projects.
- Commission and support low voltage variable frequency drives in various power levels (600V and below)
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrable track record of developing effective machine control systems
- Structured text is preferred as a primary development language. Consideration would be given for any of the IEC 61131-3, Kuka KRL, or .Net C# programing languages.
- Strong communication network background with the following protocols EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, CanOPEN / Device Net, Modbus TCP & RTU)
- Experience integrating industrial robot systems from Kuka, Panasonic, ABB, Fanuc, or Motoman.
- Working knowledge of the relevant robot safety standards.
- Windows (XP,7 Embedded, CE7) system administration experience
- Strong design skills with attention to detail
- Experience with electrical instrumentation equipment
- General working knowledge of EPLAN an asset
- Ability to quickly assess and integrate third party equipment into final solution
- Continuous learning of new technologies as required.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Possess well-developed troubleshooting skills, to quickly diagnose issues over email, phone. Provide excellent customer service as required
Qualifications
- Degree in relevant Engineering discipline (Computer, Electrical, Mechatronics).
- 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
- Legally able to travel to and from the United States of America
